October 21, 2021 – Developed by the U.S. Defence Department, first responders including the California National Guard can now deploy instant private 5G networks in emergency situations. The technology builds on two-way voice and land mobile radio, and does not require changing SIM cards on bring-your-own phones, which is vital when using devices in emergencies. The DoD innovation also highlights the growing role of the U.S. military in the development of spectrum policy and 5G networks.
