April 21, 2021 – The C.D. Howe Institute has formed a working group to examine issues of quality, infrastructure, investment and access in the national wireless sector. The group concluded that excessive spectrum costs and regulation could impede Canada’s economic competitiveness and the rollout of 5G. After analyzing data for 27 countries, it found that Canadian spectrum costs are nearly four times above the global average. The report also found that the structure of federal auctions tends to generate higher prices.

April 14, 2021 – ENCQOR 5G and Ericsson have launched an end-to-end standalone network, which builds on an earlier non-standalone (NSA) network provided by Ericsson. Among its advantages are that one-way latency tolerance will be under 5 milliseconds – a key benefit for edge-based applications. Earlier this year, Ericsson also launched an Open Lab at its Kanata R&D facility that will allow partners and customers to develop new technologies in the emerging field of virtualized 5G Radio Access Networks.

April 12, 2021 – The federal Strategic Innovation Fund will invest $14 million in a Redline Communications project to develop 5G products for industries such as mining, utilities, and oil and gas. Based out of Markham, Ontario, Redline specializes in private wireless networks. Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne has said the faster 5G technology will enable industrial clients to remotely monitor and control their machines. Including federal support, the project is estimated to cost $39.5 million.

April 19, 2021 – The latest reports indicate Apple may be planning to release a 5G mmWave version of the iPhone 13 in several countries, including Canada. Currently, iPhone 12s are only sold in an mmWave format in the U.S., where they represent 30-35% of iPhone 12 shipments. In the future, mmWave devices will make up 55-66% of iPhone 13 shipments. In Canada, mmWave spectrum will not be available until after June 2021, when the government conducts a 3500 MHz auction that was postponed due to Covid-19.

April 1, 2021 – According to Opensignal’s Analysis Team Lead, Ian Fogg, smartphone users can enjoy download speeds nearly 30 times faster on 5G mmWave than on public Wi-Fi. Although 5G mmWave and Wi-Fi offer similar availability, 5G download and upload speeds are 31.4 Mbps and 14.1 Mbps, respectively, which makes them 43.4% and 25.9% faster than Wi-Fi. While Wi-Fi may continue to serve homes, offices and public spaces, Fogg expects it will eventually be seen as a cheap "complement" to cellular services.
