May 25, 2021 – The Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) has announced that 3650-4200 MHz band spectrum will be repurposed to promote rural connectivity and 5G deployment. This will increase the amount of C-band that is available for 5G from 50 MHz to 250 MHz – consistent with similar policy decisions in the U.S. A 3800 MHz auction has also been announced for the first quarter of 2023 in Canada. Although a date of March 31, 2025 has been set for vacating previously held spectrum, satellite providers serving far north communities will be able to maintain their holdings.

May 26, 2021 – Bell is expanding its 5G network to 23 more cities and towns across Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. Last February, the company announced the largest capital expenditure plan in its history, with at least $1 billion dedicated to building new networks over a two-year timeframe to support Canada's economic recovery from Covid-19. This builds on the annual investment of $4 billion that Bell regularly puts toward the development of wireless and fibre network infrastructure and telecom services in Canada.

May 13, 2021 – After launching next-generation wireless in Montreal last December, Videotron expanded its 5G services to Quebec City on May 12, 2021. The initial deployment will focus on the region north-west of Parliament Hill, and is set to gradually expand over the next several months. Videotron additionally plans to expand its 5G network to other centres throughout the province soon. President and CEO Jean-François Pruneau has said he is proud of the digital revolution that such developments are helping to bring about.

May 20, 2021 – A new study by European firm Omdia finds that a 5G-enabled world could create over one million jobs, reduce environmental harm, and generate €407 billion in sales by the year 2030. Due to its quality control, real-time analytics and energy-management benefits, 5G could enable €100 of sales in manufacturing alone. The study – which researched countries such as France, Poland and Spain – added that 33 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions could be avoided through the implementation of 5G.

May 18, 2021 – As the music business recovers from Covid-19, 5G could play a key role in the live performance opportunities that artists, labels and promoters are exploring outside of traditional concerts. While all industries experiment with 5G, major telcos are focusing on arts and entertainment in particular – developing hybrid applications that will give artists, fans and venues powerful streaming options. 5G can also improve the pre-show experience by helping fans to find seats, merchandise and shorter lines in advance. At present, 60 stadiums and other large U.S. venues are already equipped with 5G from Verizon.

May 10, 2021 – As some degree of remote work is likely to be the 'new normal', operators and vendors are seeking to provide enterprise-level connectivity from the home. As a result, enterprise-focused applications may be the true growth opportunity for 5G fixed wireless. Earlier this month, Ericsson announced a virtual workplace solution that will target small-medium sized businesses in need of 5G business applications, storage, collaboration and security. Its Wireless Office service offers a managed IT environment that can fully support digital remote work – highlighting the potential that the enterprise sector represents for 5G.
