Rogers Brings 5G to 14 More Quebec Communities

July 15, 2021 – Rogers has extended its 5G network to 14 more Quebec towns as part of an effort to enhance connectivity in 360 communities before the end of 2021. The number of Quebec communities with Rogers 5G access is now in excess of 80 towns and cities. Bell to Partner With Google on Its 5G Cloud

July 15, 2021 – Bell has announced it will move 5G workloads to Google Cloud as part of a multi-year partnership. The carrier announced a similar hyperscaler arrangement with Amazon Web Services in June to support 5G multi-access edge compute (MEC) services. Last May, UK operator Vodafone entered a similar partnership with Google Cloud. Bell intends to expand 5G to 50% of the Canadian population by the end of this year, and has begun offering 5G roaming on networks reaching more than 90% of the U.S.

In healthcare, CENGN noted that telemedicine will reduce wait times, travel times and overall health costs. IoT sensors will improve safety in the manufacturing sector by rapidly detecting factory hazards. Retail businesses can benefit from using VR to grow their customer bases, while entertainment companies can leverage 5G to develop more immersive augmented reality (AR) games. In the automotive industry, 5G will make it possible to connect vehicles with smart city infrastructure to enable solutions for public safety, parking, route planning, congestion and other traffic-related issues.

200 Million 5G Roaming Users by 2026

July 26, 2021 – With international travel resuming, and demand for data set to increase domestically and abroad, Juniper Research is forecasting that the number of 5G roamers will exceed 200 million between 2021 and 2026. In their latest whitepaper, released this month, global 5G roaming is expected to increase 4,500% – from 4.5 million to 210 million users. During the same five-year period, roaming traffic on 5G networks is expected to rise from 2.6 to 770 petabytes worldwide.

Broadband, Satellite Players Vie for 12 GHz

July 13, 2021 – 12 GHz refers to a 500 MHz range between 12.2-12.7 GHz, also called the K band, which has traditionally been used for satellite communications – including by the International Space Station. Lately, it has become at issue in the contest between satellite technology and 5G, with calls being made to open the band up for greater broadband use. The FCC is considering such proposals, while U.S. satellite players contend that a shared-use model would interfere with their provision of incumbent satellite services.

Mobile Industry Needs 2 GHz of Spectrum by 2030

July 9, 2021 – According to GSMA, governments should license an average of 2 GHz of upper mid-band to ensure efficient 5G deployment in cities around the world. This was the conclusion of a report that analyzed the spectrum needed to deliver reliable 5G service in 36 cities between 2025 and 2030. Such deployments would be consistent with the data speed requirements of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). In addition to using 3.3-3.8 GHz spectrum, meanwhile, GSMA recommends the long-term use of 3.3-4.2 GHz, 4.8 GHz and 6 GHz frequencies, as well.
