Rogers 5G Expands to Dartmouth and Bedford in NS

September 23, 2021 – Rogers is expanding its 5G network to Dartmouth and Bedford in Nova Scotia, with services now available in 16 communities across Saint John, Halifax, Moncton and Fredericton. By the end of 2021, Rogers will enhance wireless connectivity in 25 more Atlantic communities. Since 2020, the company has performed 5G and LTE upgrades in 32 communities across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland and Labrador. These improvements are vital during the pandemic, “when world-class connections have played a critical role,” says Matt MacLellan, Rogers president of the Atlantic region.

Xplornet Launching Rural 5G Standalone Network

September 22, 2021 – Xplornet, which operates a combination of Canadian satellite and LTE fixed wireless (FWA) networks, has launched its first rural 5G standalone network. Xplornet’s FWA service will debut in New Brunswick, with plans to bring 5G to 250 additional rural communities by 2022. In 2019, Xplornet announced a five-year, $500M fibre and satellite expansion. Last December, it named Ericsson as its 5G standalone radio partner. In July, the company obtained 263 licenses in Canada’s 3500 MHz 5G auction.

Bell Supports Augmented Reality Effect for TikTok

September 22, 2021 – Bell is collaborating with TikTok Canada on an augmented reality (AR) Paint Portal feature. The application harnesses 5G’s speed, capacity and low-latency capabilities to let multiple TikTok users create 3D paintings together in real time. The innovation follows Bell’s launch of TSN 5G View earlier in 2021, as well as its food-delivery collaboration with Toronto AI company Tiny Mile this year. Bell has also entered agreements with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud to further leverage 5G possibilities.

Understanding 5G: A Guide for Local Communities

September 21, 2021 – The European Telecommunications Network Operators' Association (ETNO) and GSMA have produced a one-hour webinar to showcase their Understanding 5G document, which is being published as a 5G guide for local communities. The guide focuses on the socioeconomic benefits 5G offers to cities and EU regions, while addressing the myths around 5G technology. 5G regulations in different countries are also addressed, as well as how local authorities can carry out safe and efficient 5G roll-outs.

5G Emergency Services Drone Being Tested in UK

September 14, 2021 – Virgin Media O2 and Swiss public safety specialist Fotokite have trialed a tethered drone system to assist first responders. The device connects to a ground station using ultra-thin cables and transfers 5G data to provide emergency workers with a bird's eye view from up to 45 metres in the air. The drone can operate under harsh conditions, including at night, and may “transform how emergency services operate and react to life-threatening situations,” according to Rob Searle, head of 5G at Virgin Media O2.
