Rogers Completes Nationwide 5G Core Rollout

October 25, 2021 – Rogers has completed a nationwide 5G standalone core network that is independent of LTE technology. It also announced 5G standalone device certification, meaning customers with specific Google phones can automatically connect to the network in eligible regions. Rogers will deploy standalone 5G service in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver over the coming months. Rogers started its 5G standalone rollout with Ericsson last December, and has invested $3.3B in 3.5GHz spectrum for 5G deployment.

October 19, 2021 – TSN has expanded its 5G View app feature so Raptors fans can pause, zoom, slow down and re-watch nearly 360° replays. Using Bell’s 5G network, TSN 5G View includes on-demand highlights providing immersive viewing options with showcased clips from Raptors, Maple Leafs and Canadiens home games on TSN and RDS. “Fans can experience the game and control what they see from every possible angle, directly from their 5G mobile device,” said Bell's SVP Product Platforms, Nauby Jacob.

Global 5G Connections to Hit 3.6 Billion by 2025

October 21, 2021 – According to CCS Insight, 5G connections will increase threefold in 2021, up to 637 million, and more than double next year, up to 1.34 billion. By 2025, they are expected to reach 3.6 billion. In the Christmas quarter, CCS cautions that supply chain issues for high-end devices like the iPhone may impact 5G adoption. South Korea currently leads 5G adoption with over 30% of mobile traffic on 5G networks. In North America, CCS expects 60% of phones sold in 2021 to support 5G, and 85% by 2024.

October 21, 2021 – Developed by the U.S. Defence Department, first responders including the California National Guard can now deploy instant private 5G networks in emergency situations. The technology builds on two-way voice and land mobile radio, and does not require changing SIM cards on bring-your-own phones, which is vital when using devices in emergencies. The DoD innovation also highlights the growing role of the U.S. military in the development of spectrum policy and 5G networks.

3.45GHz FCC Auction Passes $14B Reserve Price

October 20, 2021 – Proceeds from the 3.45-3.5GHz Andromeda auction have surpassed the FCC’s $14.8B reserve price. Previously, there were concerns it may not be met and the auction could fail to close. Auction 110 opened on October 5 in accordance with a U.S. congressional mandate to begin offering the spectrum before year-end. 33 qualified companies are bidding for 3.35GHz – which, along with 3.5GHz CBRS and 3.7GHz C-band – is characterized by the FCC as 530MHz of contiguous spectrum for 5G use.
