November 15, 2021 – Despite the economy contracting 5.4% due to COVID-19, telecom contributed over $70B to Canada's GDP in 2020, while supporting close to 600,000 jobs. A CWTA-commissioned report by Accenture found the industry invested over $11B in infrastructure in 2020 to keep Canadians connected during the pandemic. Accenture’s and CWTA’s previous study concluded that 5G will be more sustainable than past generations of wireless, including by reducing carbon emissions through enabling remote work.

November 16, 2021 – UBC has partnered with Rogers to study the impact of 5G on transportation. One area they are researching is intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which use 5G networks to transmit vehicle data. They have also partnered on 5G projects such as using 5G to monitor forest conditions for wildfire management. The University of Waterloo, meanwhile, began testing autonomous 5G shuttles last June, with the University participating in an Automated Vehicle Pilot Program for approved driverless vehicles in Ontario.

November 18, 2021 – Ericsson employees can now enhance their AI and machine learning (ML) skills through a series of Concordia University projects and lectures that explore big data, infrastructure, programming and deep learning. The program was launched in October and is the latest collaboration between Concordia and Ericsson. They jointly founded a network cybersecurity program in 2019 and – along with ENCQOR 5G – established a program in 2020 to improve 5G performance using AI, cloud and edge computing.

October 20, 2021 – A new study from Mobile UK concluded that interconnected 5G systems can reduce carbon emissions when they are deployed at scale. The report found this could eliminate 250M tonnes of CO² from the global energy sector by 2030, through facilitating greater use of wind and solar energy. In manufacturing, the G7’s combined CO²e output could decrease by 182M tonnes as of 2035. 5G drones and sensors, moreover, could reduce CO²e emissions in the UK’s agricultural sector by 1M tonnes by 2035.

November 9, 2021 – Responding to the development and deployment of commercial 5G, the Department of National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF) want to stimulate the application of advances in 5G technology to Canadian defence and security issues. They are promoting an opportunity to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research that will be funded up to $1.5M over three years.

November 8, 2021 – The City of Calgary is looking to explore new opportunities presented by 5G and connect with industry players to establish one or more 5G Digital Playgrounds. The objective is to provide a testbed environment for collaborators to experiment and research 5G’s capabilities, while generating feedback to further develop the network(s) in the testbed. The extended deadline is January 12, 2022.
