MWC 2022: Background Report and 5G Predictions

February 25, 2022 – Analysts at Omdia have prepared a report to accompany this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Co-author and Omdia research director Dario Talmesio expects MWC 2022 to focus on the “real 5G”, which he envisions as standalone 5G, network slicing, and the cloud. Interest in business-to-business 5G and private networks is also expected – driven by demand from enterprise – as well as explorations of Open RAN and next-generation 5G core.

U.S. Testing, Deployment of Discreet Small Cells

February 25, 2022 – Together with Ericsson and Ubicquia, AT&T is field testing new 5G small cell radios designed to blend in on top of street lamps. The low-band and mid-band radios promise aesthetic improvement without bulky wires or boxes, and can be deployed within 15 minutes. They are additionally designed to connect to nearby fiber – reducing the need for more standalone small cell towers – and will help to further connect underserved communities.

In-Car 5G Connections Available for 2024 Audis

February 23, 2022 – 2024 model Audis will use Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network to enable faster over-the-air updates, 3D mapping, and additional driver-assistance features. The two companies have been building on Audi’s existing Traffic Light Information feature by developing C-V2X technology. A list of Audi models slated for 5G will be announced in the coming months, while other carmakers including Honda have announced similar plans for in-car 5G connections.

Plans to Make Phone Calls More Interactive With 5G

February 22, 2022 – Based on 5G remote interaction, Samsung, Ericsson and Telefonica are collaborating on a proof of concept project that would enable phone calls to provide more than just voice. Rather than relying on separate apps, the project involves equipping voice calls with more tools for collaboration – such as screen sharing, AR, gaming, and ways to input information while on hold. Such use cases will be demonstrated at MWC 2022 this month.

Carleton University Welcomes 5G Research Chair

February 24, 2022 – A $2M 5G research chair has been established through the Ericsson-Carleton University Partnership, with the goal of studying real-world 5G applications. The chair, Ioannis Lambadaris, has said “fiber optics will retreat into the background and 5G wireless will be what consumers actually interact with.” The new position was established with $1M in investment from Ericsson, as well as $1M from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s Alliance Grant program.

Canadian Smartphones 2X Faster With 5G: Report

February 16, 2022 – According to Opensignal’s latest report, 98% of the global 5G market has seen faster speeds at the slowest hour of the day (when data usage usually causes delays). In Canada, 5G nearly doubled download speeds at the slowest hour – rising from 28.4 Megabits-per-second to 54.7Mbps. Before 5G, Opensignal found Canada’s overall download speed was 42.5Mbps, which rose to 62Mbps by December 2021. The report predicts speeds will continue to rise as more 5G spectrum is made available.
