May 7, 2022 – You might not realize it, but many modern vehicles on the road today are essentially computers on wheels. From multiple sensors to reduce emissions, to automated safety features and performance enhancements, roughly 50 different computer systems all help manage what’s going on under the hood and in the cabin. No wonder computer-chip makers and software companies are setting their sights on powering tomorrow’s vehicles. And just like any computer, it works best when it can communicate with other machines, which is why the latest in cellular technology, 5G, is making its way to vehicles.

Bell open first edge computing site with AWS

shutterstock 1602790330
April 29, 2022 – Bell today announced the launch of the first public multi-access edge computing (MEC) with AWS Wavelength in Canada. Building on Bell's agreement with AWS, announced last year, together the two companies are deploying AWS Wavelength Zones throughout the country at the edge of Bell's 5G network starting in Toronto. Bell Public MEC with AWS Wavelength embeds AWS compute and storage services at the edge of the Bell 5G network, closer to mobile and connected devices where data is generated and consumed. This enables software developers and businesses to take full advantage of the high speed and low latency of Bell's 5G network and the cloud with AWS to build innovative, low-latency solutions that leverage real-time visual data processing, augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR), artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), advanced robotics, and much more.

April 28, 2022 – Speaking at this week’s Brooklyn 6G Summit, Qualcomm’s SVP of Engineering John Smee took a bird’s-eye view at the 5G landscape and the evolution to 6G. He noted that 5G standardization work began with Release 15 and has now progressed through Release 16 and 17, which just finished. Release 17 moved into new technologies, such as non-terrestrial networks and the introduction of New Radio Reduced Capability (NR-RedCap) for the internet of things (IoT). NR-RedCap only needs 10 MHz bandwidth to achieve a data rate of 150 Mbps and can reduce the power consumption of IoT devices. It is expected to be adopted in places where power supply is unavailable and high-speed transmission is required. Smee considers the next phase with Releases 18, 19 and 20 as the “5G Advanced” era, culminating in 6G around the year 2030.
