Canadian Industry Groups Clear Up 5G Safety Myths

cwta
May 29, 2020 – To address misleading information being circulated about 5G, the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) and 5G Canada Council (5GCC) have produced a “Setting the Record Straight” fact sheet to clear up some common misconceptions about 5G safety. Conspiracy theories about the dangers of 5G have built on older myths about radiofrequency exposure from wireless technology, and the CWTA and 5GCC say these continue to be discredited by global health authorities.

Government Websites Refute 5G Conspiracy Claims

Canada 1b
May 14, 2020 – Both Health Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) updated their websites this month to feature information confirming the safety of 5G devices and network equipment. The Health Canada website provides advice on 5G safety issues, as well as how to evaluate “studies” that are sometimes used to validate 5G conspiracy theories. ISED’s website notes there is still no scientific basis for claims that 5G may be related to COVID-19, cancer, or other public health risks.

New Smart City Project to Launch in Kelowna, BC

UBC 2f
May 28, 2020 – A new Canadian 5G smart city project will launch next week as a collaboration between the University of British Columbia (UBC), Rogers and the City of Kelowna. A 5G solution proposed at a UBC hackathon last March is now being implemented as a pilot project in which LiDAR light sensors will be installed at two Kelowna intersections, collecting anonymous data to help UBC researchers improve traffic safety. Additional intersections will be equipped with light sensors from Blue City Technology later in 2020.

Australian Government to Promote Benefits of 5G

Australia 2b
May 13, 2020 – A new parliamentary report from Australia says 5G is both safe and critical for economic development, and that the government should better communicate these facts to the public. The report was based on decades of research into mobile safety that disputes recent 5G conspiracy theories. It follows comments by Australian communications minister, Paul Fletcher, linking such theories to acts of vandalism, and Australia’s commitment of $9 million toward an awareness campaign to combat 5G myths.

FCC Will Vote on Plan to Expedite 5G Upgrades

FCC 2b
May 19, 2020 – On June 9, the FCC will vote on a plan to clarify rules for 5G-related infrastructure upgrades. Among other issues, the plan will clarify what telecom equipment can be added to existing structures, as well as what rules cities can enforce regarding concealment of equipment. A Republican majority in the FCC believes these changes will allow carriers to deploy 5G networks more efficiently. “This is going to take 3G and 4G sites and make it easier and faster to upgrade them to 5G,” said Commissioner Brendan Carr.

Comparing 5G Aesthetics with Technical Performance

Aesthetic 5c
May 21, 2020 – According to CommScope’s Iris Troiano, aesthetics are as important as technical performance when it comes to 5G densification. This makes the deployment of aesthetically pleasing equipment like small cells increasingly vital. “Carriers have different radio requirements, municipalities have different aesthetic requirements,” Troiano said. Even within a single city, highly-integrated aesthetics may be appropriate for downtown, whereas pole attachments could better serve outlying areas.

COVID-19: Will Networks Be Ready for New Devices?

Corona 2b
May 13, 2020 – Evidence suggests that releases of 5G smartphones and broadband modems will continue as usual this year, even as some products arrive later than expected. Questions do exist about how consumers will respond to traditional summer and back-to-school promotions, meanwhile, due to uncertainty about their employment and reopening of schools. Gaining permission from local governments to build-out networks remains a key obstacle for U.S. carriers, while government coordination in China has limited COVID-19’s impact on 5G deployment.

C-19: 5G Capex to Rebound After Short-Term Decline

Economic 1d
May 20, 2020 – Research by Analysys Mason indicates the 5G business case remains largely intact, but setbacks to network deployment and consumer demand may occur in the middle of 2020. Their assessment of COVID-19’s impact on 5G supply and demand found that disruptions to network rollout may cause some operators to rethink short-term investments. While 5G capital expenditures could decline slightly in 2020, however, they expect 2021 investments to be 9.7% greater than previously forecast.
