October 14, 2020 – Efficient deployment of 5G networks will help Canada to achieve its climate change reduction commitments, according to new research commissioned by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA). The report, "Accelerating 5G in Canada: The Role of 5G in the Fight Against Climate Change," developed by Accenture, says 5G will dramatically increase the energy efficiency of Canada’s wireless networks and support technologies that can reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in industries such as mining, forestry, transportation and manufacturing.

October 13, 2020 – With the arrival of 5G iPhones, Rogers is expanding its network to serve customers in 130 cities and towns who use next-generation devices. Rogers Infinite and Rogers for Business Shared Unlimited Data plans will offer 5G at no extra charge. “Strong digital infrastructure will not only help Canadians get the most of their 5G devices, but is critical to fuel productivity and innovation across this country,” said Brent Johnston, president of wireless services. According to Bell Mobility president Claire Gillies, Bell launched its own 5G network last June and is expected to reach at least 50 markets in 2020.

October 5, 2020 – Tbaytel plans to begin work on its regional wireless 5G network next year, with site-building and network integration activities set for 2021. The company positioned itself for 5G in 2019 by purchasing additional spectrum, with VP Kory MacLeod noting that “Tbaytel is well positioned to build a world-class 5G network for Northern Ontario.” According to Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips, COVID-19 emphasized the need for such investments in Ontario's digital economy, adding that "expanding 5G will benefit people across Ontario and help set up our province to succeed in the economy of the future."

October 18, 2020 – Area X.O is a smart city located on a 1,800-acre farm near Ottawa where participating companies can test technologies such as drones, autonomous vehicles and smart agriculture through on-site roadways, traffic lights and railway crossings powered by Area X.O’s 5G network. The network allows “instantaneous communication from all the devices in the area,” according to one of the project’s founding partners, Nokia. The Government of Canada also announced $7 million in funding for the project earlier this month, to enable smaller businesses to develop products using Area X.O’s 5G innovation tools.

October 19, 2020 – As COVID-19 conspiracy theories lead to attacks on telecom workers and equipment in 10 European states, members of the European Union are calling for an EU initiative to combat 5G disinformation. While the EU sees 5G as key to its economic recovery, 15 countries say that 5G disinformation could undermine this recovery. Their joint letter calls for a public awareness campaign that could address the concerns of 5G opponents, saying “member states are willing to contribute to this initiative with our national expertise and best practice to tackle the issue of 5G and EMF disinformation.”

October 13, 2020 – Apple has launched a new iPhone with faster 5G connectivity that the company hopes will prompt upgrades and lift sales this year. The iPhone 12 is designed to operate on both mmWave and Sub-6 GHz spectrum. Prior to launch, Apple tested 5G with over 800 carriers around the world. According to the Verge, the device's network status bar will display the best available speed in a given area – including 5G – which may differ from the speed the phone is actually connected to, due to its 'Smart Data' feature.

October 11, 2020 – 5G will increase global GDP by $8 trillion by the year 2030, according to a new Nokia report on 5G's likely business and industry impact. Within 7 years, the report finds that a majority of information and communications technology (ICT) spending will be dedicated to 5G+. Nokia uses the term “5G+” to encompass 5G and technologies such as edge cloud infrastructure, private networks, automation, AI, sensing and robotics. By 2030, 5G+ technologies are expected to make up $4.5 trillion of ICT spending.
