CRTC Seeks 5G Infrastructure Authority, Expects 50Mbps Broadband for 90% of Canadians by 2021

October 30, 2018 – In Senate consultations on modernizing the Telecommunications Act, CRTC chair Ian Scott said that 90% of Canadians will have access to 50Mbps broadband speeds by 2021. Eligibility for the $750M CRTC broadband fund is conditional on providing speeds of 25Mbps or higher. ISED Issues RFP for 27.529.5GHz mmWave Test Bed

October 23, 2018 – Following a consultation on 5G deployment last year, ISED is requesting proposals to launch a test bed for 27.5-29.5GHz millimetre wave spectrum. The Communications Research Centre, ISED's R&D agency, seeks a platform for testing the mobile urban environment. The platform will:
  • analyze data in over-the-air transmissions
  • test and demonstrate 5G communications
  • measure radio channels in challenging locations ("channel sounding")
ISED's request for proposals was published on October 22. The winner will have three years to complete its mmWave tests, with the option of also testing 37-40GHz frequencies. (Courtesy of The Wire.)
