November 22, 2018 – In a Fall Economic Statement released on November 21, Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced the Accelerated Investment Initiative – a new tax policy that will support investment and innovation in Canadian infrastructure. This comes as a timely development, as Canada prepares for the arrival of 5G networks, both domestically and on a global stage as early as next year. Improved capital cost deductions promise to accelerate the deployment of "next-generation digital technology" across Canada.

November 14, 2018 – ISED Minister Navdeep Bains has announced a $20-million investment in Ottawa firm Ranovus, which could generate 566 new jobs and energy-saving technology solutions. Ranovus supplies cost-efficient energy connectivity for data centres and communications networks. ISED's investment came through the $1.26-billion Strategic Innovation Fund, enabling Ranovus to invest a further $220 million into R&D, advanced manufacturing, employment and collaboration with other companies and research groups.

November 27, 2018 – The FCC's 28GHz spectrum auction collected over $241 million after its 22nd round ended on Tuesday. This was the seventh day of bidding for 27.5-29GHz bands, which will play a critical role in the deployment of 5G networks. The importance of 28GHz high-band has been recognized by both the FCC and the White House, noting its suitability for 5G wireless, IoT and other advanced-spectrum services. As of Tuesday, the FCC retained 576 licenses to be up for sale when Day 8 of the auction resumes.

November 25, 2018 – Despite a recent White House memo promising to win the "race to 5G", Anthony Rutkowski of Netmagic Associates cautions that the primary goal of countries like the U.S. should be to bring together global communication networks. While the U.S. may benefit from being able to leverage its strengths in cloud data and virtualized network services, Rutkowski's editorial for CircleID commented that Americans could achieve greater progress by aligning their multilateral policies (including trade policy) with 5G objectives, and better incentivizing U.S. companies to participate in global industry venues like 3GPP.

November 15, 2018 – Ericsson, Vodafone and BMW have questioned the European Commission's stance on vehicular communication and its reliance on WiFi technology. They point out the lack of progress that WiFi has made in smart transport networks, while telecoms and automotive companies have conducted promising road tests of vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology. Because the Commission's stance on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) does not take a technology neutral approach, the group warns that Europe could fall behind the U.S. and other regions in the adoption of digital mobile and in 5G investment.

November 12, 2018 – At the DC5G conference in Washington, Samsung SVP Public Policy, John Godfrey, said that a 5G world will be a seamless, connected experience that spans multiple devices and settings. It is on the national scale that Godfrey sees the most potential for new applications such as drone delivery, cloud training and remote system command-and-control. He also predicted that the "unknown killer app" will emerge when entrepreneurs combine the speed, low latency, cloud computing and AI capabilities of 5G into unforeseen new products and services.
