Prediction: Billions in 5G Carrier Investment by 2021

December 12, 2018 – The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its 2019 predictions for Canadian information and communications technology. Several predictions relate to the infrastructural benefits of edge computing, mega clouds, 5G and IoT. IDC predicts that “from 2019 to 2021, Canadian wireless carriers will invest billions in 5G.” Their December 6 presentation further stated that business leaders need to envision "how artificial intelligence, 5G wireless and other new technology developments will impact the future of work.”

ISED Announces List of 600 MHz Auction Participants

December 7, 2018 – ISED has provided a list of applicants for its March 2019 600 MHz auction. The list does not include Cogeco, who indicated that the larger geographic areas the auction is based on would make its acquisition of spectrum "uneconomical". Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains has stated that 43% of the spectrum auctioned will be set aside for regional players and new wireless entrants. As announced at www.IC.gc.ca, the participants include:

  • Iris Technologies, Novus Entertainment, Rogers, SaskTel, SSi Micro

AT&T Prioritizing Mobile 5G, 12 Launches This Friday

December 18, 2018 – AT&T will launch mobile 5G in 12 cities on December 21 by making its "puck" hot spot available to select customers, with expanded eligibility planned for this spring. According to president of operations, Scott Mair, AT&T is distinguishing its 5G strategy from Verizon’s by prioritizing its mobile network – deploying small cells to power 5G services, but mainly to alleviate high traffic congestion. AT&T's fixed and short-range 5G services will primarily target business customers.

5G Spectrum Granted Until 2020 for China-Wide Trials

December 12, 2018 – The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has approved mid-band trial licenses for China’s three mobile operators:
  • China Mobile will use 2.15-2.675 GHz and 4.8-4.9 GHz spectrum to conduct its nationwide trials.
  • China Unicom will conduct nationwide tests using 3.5-3.6 GHz spectrum.
  • China Telecom has approval to test 3.4-3.5 GHz frequencies in mainland China.
China Unicom and China Telecom were each issued 100 MHz of C-band, while China Mobile received 260 MHz in two ranges of 5G spectrum. The licenses are valid until 2020, when wide-scale network testing is expected to transition to commercial service launches.

U.S. Wants 'Fully-Autonomous' Vehicles on the Road

December 4, 2018 – Current U.S. safety rules require motor vehicles to contain driver controls such as steering wheels and foot pedals. A new plan from the Department of Transportation, however, may pave the way for fully driverless cars. "Automated Vehicles 3.0" is the latest series of guidelines published by the federal government to facilitate the safe, pro-business deployment of self-driving cars. The 80-page plan does not yet take a position on whether such cars should rely on 5G connectivity standards like 'C-V2X'.
