CWTA Events Highlight Canadian Preparations for 5G in 2018-2019

January 11, 2019 – Due to overwhelming demand, Canada's leading event for information on 5G wireless networks, 5G Canada 2019, has been moved to a larger venue at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. On February 5, Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) President & CEO Robert Ghiz will deliver a keynote address to the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce at the World Trade Centre Edmonton. BlackBerry Licenses Security Tech to IoT Developers

January 7, 2019 – BlackBerry will license secure software development technology to IoT device makers, after conducting a survey that found 80% of consumers prefer IoT devices with stronger data and privacy protection. At the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company announced that its team of cyber security experts will review each device created with licensed BlackBerry technology, to provide certification that IoT data meets up-to-date security standards.

Ford Will Use 'C-V2X' in All New U.S. Vehicles by 2022

January 8, 2019 – Ford will use cellular vehicle-to-everything technology (C-V2X) in all new vehicles by 2022. This is instead of using Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC), which may represent a shift in U.S. 5.9 GHz spectrum allocation. GM and Toyota previously planned to use DSRC, but their deployment has so far been limited. In 1999, the FCC set aside a portion of 5.9 GHz spectrum for safety systems in vehicles. The FCC has since conducted testing on spectrum-sharing between DSRC and Wi-Fi which occupies the adjacent 6 GHz band.

Samsung Planning 5G-Capable Smartphones for 2019

January 4, 2019 – Samsung is set to release up to five Galaxy S10 smartphones in 2019. Among them will reportedly be two 5G-capable devices, Beyond X and Beyond Bolt. "Bolt" is intended to be a Verizon exclusive with increased battery size. In addition to these 5G-ready smartphones, other planned releases include two standard models (the Galaxy S10 and S10+), as well a less expensive S10 Lite variant.

Most Americans Look Forward to 5G, Study Shows

January 3, 2019 – A new T-Mobile survey found that 57% of Americans are aware of 5G. Among them, 90% look forward to the innovations it will bring. Consumers expect that 5G will enhance their businesses, personal lives, communities and government, such as by creating new jobs. Customers identified speed, reliability and coverage as areas where 5G would have the greatest impact. T-Mobile plans to conduct similar surveys with HarrisX on a quarterly basis going forward.

66% of Organizations to Deploy 5G Networks by 2020

December 21, 2018 – Two-thirds of organizations plan to deploy 5G networks by 2020, with IoT communications and video being their primary use cases. According to a study by Gartner Inc., the full exploitation of 5G will require new elements such as edge computing, core network slicing and radio network densification. As a result, organizations seeking to leverage IoT comms, video, control, automation, fixed wireless or high-performance edge analytics cannot rely exclusively on public 5G infrastructure.
