Rogers and UBC Plan to Build 5G Hub in Vancouver

September 20, 2018 – Rogers and UBC have announced a three year, multi-million dollar deal to build a Vancouver 5G Hub as a testbed for 5G innovation. Rogers will begin deploying 5G-ready network infrastructure to the UBC campus in early 2019. The partnership will study applications such as AI, machine learning, autonomous vehicles, traffic safety, and network slicing for use in robotics, farming and medicine.

5G Adoption in Canada and U.S. Will Outpace Europe and Asia

September 13, 2018 – There will be approximately 200 million 5G mobile connections in Canada and the U.S. by 2025, according to a new report from GSMA. They will make up 49% of the total market – a higher adoption rate than Europe or key Asian markets. The GSMA report projects that the economic contribution of the North American mobile industry will be $1.1 trillion in 2022 (representing 4.9% of total GDP and a 32% increase since 2017).

Market Predictions for Future of 5G

September 21, 2018 – With many 5G deployments planned for 2019, a number of market predictions have surfaced on topics ranging from 5G services to self-organizing networks:
  • CCS Insights predicts that global 5G connections will exceed 1 billion by early 2023. By 2025, they will reach 2.7 billion (or one in five).
  • SNS Research says that 5G will be a key driver of self-organizing networks (SON), with early SON adopters seeing a 50% reduction in dropped calls and a 5-10% increase in service revenue.
  • A recent report estimated the 5G services market will be worth $123 billion by 2025. Primary drivers include demand for ultra-low latency and IoT, as well as increasing data traffic.

Verizon 5G Home to Roll Out with 10x Faster Speeds

September 16, 2018 – Verizon will become the first provider to offer 5G home internet service starting October 1 in four cities (Houston, Indianapolis, L.A. and Sacramento). Wireless data will be delivered to homes using small cells, replacing the current wired broadband infrastructure. 5G Home customers should expect network speeds averaging 300Mbps, with no data caps and peaks of nearly 1Gbps.

UK Government Offers Update on Its Path to 5G

September 11, 2018 – The UK government has provided an update on how it is working toward 5G implementation. The work is being done mainly under the banner of 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT), a program that aims to ensure the majority of Britons will have 5G access by 2027. To date, UK commitments include:
  • £5M for evaluating business models to improve connectivity on roads
  • £35M to enhance connectivity on trains (including track-to-train trials)
  • £10M for testing the security of networks, in collaboration with the National Cyber Security Centre
