5G Test Site Launched in Open-Air Smart Living Lab

May 8, 2019 – A 5G test site has gone live in the Open-Air Laboratory for Smart Living (LabVI) in Montréal. Installed on the roof of the École de technologie supérieure in the Quartier de l’Innovation, the network will test next-generation wireless applications using a high-capacity 5G radio antenna. It was designed by Videotron and Ericsson engineers to test mobile services, as well as connected objects. The Quartier de l’Innovation (QI) is a 3 km² experimental area intended to foster collaboration between entrepreneurs, academics and residents.

Street Furniture Disputes May Delay UK's 5G Rollout

May 19, 2019 – Plans to rollout 5G in the UK by attaching transmitters to tall structures like lampposts have been stymied by two years of legal wrangling. 5G requires a dense network of such attachments, but dozens of court cases now contest whether network operators or local authorities should control the structures. This threatens Westminster's goal of connecting 15M premises by 2025. According to London's chief digital officer, Theo Blackwell, a UK Electronics Communications Code intended to foster 5G deployment has backfired due to its ambiguous language about street furniture.

Trump Telecom Ban Could Disrupt Global 5G Rollout

May 16, 2019 – The White House has moved to ban sales from foreign telecom companies deemed a national security threat, while blacklisting Huawei from purchasing components. The move could dampen wireless chip manufacturing in the U.S. and also disrupt 5G rollouts around the world. According to the Eurasia Group's Paul Triolo, Michael Hirson and Jeffrey Wright, such a grave U.S. escalation with China could destabilize the networks of Huawei customers around the world, rendering the firm "unable to upgrade software and conduct routine maintenance and hardware replacement.”

5G Market in U.S. Requires More Mid-Band Spectrum

May 8, 2019 – U.S. reliance on millimetre wave spectrum could limit 5G coverage unless more mid-band is freed up. Industry executives and analysts predict that a lack of mid-band could put the U.S. farther behind countries like China. Frequencies above 26GHz can support connections many times faster than 4G, but cannot easily pass through vehicles or walls. Operators including Verizon will use beamforming techniques to address such limitations, but CTIA vice president Tom Sawanobori insists that additional mid-band spectrum will be key to expanding the "coverage and capacity" of U.S. networks..

Industrial 5G Will Take Its Cues from Commercial 5G

May 3, 2019 – At Hannover Messe 2019, Qualcomm representatives said that industrial 5G markets will benefit from the consumer market, with industrial devices taking advantage of the power and connectivity introduced by 5G smartphones. Industrial 5G and IoT will start to incorporate higher-grade graphics and computing power when 5G deployments begin in late 2019 and early 2020. According to Qualcomm's Gerardo Giaretta, though, "transformative" industrial 5G will only arrive in 2021-2022, once the ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) standard is established via 3GPP Release 16.
