March 1, 2020 – Ericsson and Carleton University have entered into a multi-year partnership to facilitate 5G wireless research and talent development for engineers and computer scientists in the field. The Ericsson-Carleton University Partnership for Research and Leadership in Wireless Networks will fund a fellowship program, student internships and experiential learning opportunities. The venture is part of a new partnership initiative at Carleton designed to enhance collaboration with the industry while also serving community needs.

February 13, 2020 – The latest Opensignal mobile network report has provided updates on Canada’s progress towards 5G deployment, including Rogers’ plans to launch 5G in over 24 markets this year. It also noted Rogers’ intention to use dynamic spectrum sharing in response to Canadian spectrum challenges such as 3.5 GHz not yet being auctioned. With respect the performance of existing LTE networks, the report concluded that Canadian download speeds are now faster than every studied country besides South Korea.

February 20, 2020 – ENCQOR 5G has signed six agreements with telecom service providers to begin its testbed trials in Canada. The signatories (Bell, Cogeco, Ecotel, Rogers, TELUS and Vidéotron) will use ENCQOR’s pre-commercial testing platform to collaborate with small and medium-sized businesses to develop new 5G services and applications. ENCQOR 5G runs five Digital Innovation Hubs throughout Ontario and Quebec, facilitating innovation in spaces such as Smart Cities, Smart Energy, Industry 4.0, e-health, autonomous vehicles and the Internet of Things.

February 24, 2019 – Recent tests by UK regulator Ofcom found “no identifiable risks” from deploying 5G technology. Now that all major UK networks have launched next-generation services, Ofcom is adding 5G bands to the measurement of electromagnetic field emissions that it has performed on mobile phone towers since 2003. The latest round of 5G testing detected no emissions higher than 0.39% of the safe exposure limits recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). According to Public Health England, this means “there should be no consequences for public health.”

February 19, 2020 – New research from Cisco indicates that 5G will support over 10% of global mobile connections within the next three years. 5G will also be relied on to provide more dynamic mobile infrastructure to enable AI and emerging IoT applications such as immersive video. By 2023, the M2M connections supporting IoT applications will make up 50% of mobile devices and connections worldwide. Cisco’s Annual Internet Report further estimates that 5G speeds will increase 13-fold by the year 2023, reaching an average speed of 575 Mbps.

February 18, 2020 – A study by Juniper Research concluded that sales from 5G IoT connections will generate $8B for mobile network operators by 2025. The $8B figure refers to new IoT connections; it does not come out of existing connectivity revenues. By the end of 2020, Juniper expected 5G IoT sales to reach $525M. This makes its 2025 projection 1,400% higher. By the year 2025, Juniper also predicted that automotive and smart city applications would represent 70% of all 5G IoT connections. This is during a time when 95% of 5G connections will be non-IoT related.

February 21, 2020 – South Korea’s three carriers have agreed to curtail 'excessive competition' in the subsidization of 5G phones. Since launching 5G last spring, they have spent $1.2B on marketing devices such as the Galaxy S10 – offering subsidies of up to 90%. In addition to the strain of this pricing war, the costs of operating 5G networks have additionally weighed down carriers’ quarterly revenues. After already facing regulatory intervention in 2002, 2004 and 2013, the carriers have again been warned by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) about offering illegal 5G subsidies or rebates.

February 11, 2020 – 5G services from British operator BT are now available for all of its customers in 50 cities, along with compatible smartphones from vendors such as Samsung. BT is offering four 5G plans that include a handset and 6GB-100GB of data starting at £45 ($77 CAD). Three Network – the last major operator to launch 5G in the UK – has also begun to roll out its next-generation services across 65 locations. Three customers with 5G-ready devices will be able to access 5G speeds at no additional cost.
